Performing has always come naturally to Delta Goodrem. Having made her first TV appearance at seven and signed a record deal at 15, the now 28-year-old has amassed an impressive portfolio of albums and TV and film appearances. While her career means she spends a large amount of her time in LA, she still loves everything Australia has to offer. We captured the singer at Hyams Beach on the NSW South Coast.
How was the shoot? "It was beautiful. You could see through the water, which was absolutely stunning. The whole area was really calm."
What were your favourite fashion pieces on the day? "I loved the white dress by Alex Perry, with the [Camilla and Marc] bikini underneath—it was really beautiful. And I liked the structure of the second outfit I wore [Dion Lee pants and an NLP swimsuit]. The pants crossed over at the front and looked strong."
What do you buy most for your own wardrobe? "I'm pretty naughty when it comes to Prada bags—I buy a lot. You can be wearing anything but if you've got a good pair of sunglasses and a good bag, you're okay."
Do you have a fashion motto? "You just have to know yourself and have fun. I enjoy expressing myself through what I wear; you've got to embrace your personality and however you're feeling on any particular day."
Has your style evolved over the years? "I've always had a slightly boho-chic look but now I feel different and want to play with my style. I'm enjoying strength in my clothes and being a bit bold. I feel comfortable in tighter outfits. I've found strength from events that have happened to me—they've reshaped my style."
You've achieved a lot in your 28 years…"It's true. Sometimes when I reflect on past events, I feel like I'm talking about things that happened 20 years ago, rather than 10 years."
Your first album, Innocent Eyes, is being repackaged as an acoustic version and hits shelves next month—what was the catalyst for reworking it? "It's 10 years since its original release and it's just been named the best-charting album by an Australian in 30 years. It was seven-and-half months at number one—and that was really special. So basically it's in celebration of ARIA releasing these statistics. It was an incredible moment and I'm extremely proud."
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? "I could never have predicted the highs and lows that would happen, so I can't [give advice]. I can only say, 'Hold on tight.'"
