Wearing a Christian Dior gown and reclining on the balcony of a mansion in Sydney's Bellevue Hill, Emma Booth is the epitome of glamour.
She's so at ease in this moment, you'd be forgiven for thinking this is her home, her wardrobe, her lifestyle. Instead, it's an example of why the 30-year-old actress is so popular with directors: her innate ability to embody a character. But in contrast to the shoot today, Booth's on-screen personas of late have been tortured souls—from real-life prostitute-turned-policewoman Kim Hollingsworth in Underbelly (Nine Network), to anorexic Rose Pickles in Cloudstreet (out now on DVD), to suicidal animal-rights activist Stevie in the film Pelican Blood.
So what's with the gritty roles? "I've lived a pretty full life, with incredible highs and lows," says the former model. "Anything less than that in a character, I just don't feel the journey is whole."
