Megan Gale made a head-turning red-carpet debut at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend. InStyle has the inside scoop on her experience with the glitz, glamour and gowns at the event!
The Australian beauty attended Cannes as an ambassador for one of the festival's sponsors, L'Oréal. In her role, Gale had a tres busy weekend. First stop: The premiere of Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey's film Mud on Saturday, followed by the closing ceremony of the festival on Sunday. Here, Gale shares her account of exactly what it felt like to walk in her designer shoes at the glamorous soirée…
Cannes atmosphere
"I have been in Cannes before (2007) for a photo shoot while the festival was on, so I am very familiar with the excitement and energy here during this time of year. However, attending the festival in an official capacity and walking the red carpet is a whole other level of excitement!"
Calm before the Mud premiere…
"During the day I didn't really have time to think about walking the red carpet as I had back-to-back photo shoots and interviews, but I kept waiting for the realisation to sink in that I was about to walk the red carpet at Cannes and then, naturally, be consumed by nerves and butterflies. Strangely enough, it never happened!"
Walking the red carpet
"I was super-excited and couldn't wait to get there but in the car driving down the main street which was packed with people, I was eerily calm and relaxed. I think I got into that headspace because – it being such an important moment for myself and my client – I didn't want to be riddled with nerves, not be able to focus and therefore do a bad job. I also wanted to enjoy the moment, and by approaching it all in a calm, relaxed way it allowed me to just be in the moment and take it all in. It was an amazing experience and I'll never forget it."
Two fabulous gowns
"For my first night [the Mud premiere] I really wanted to support the Australian fashion industry and bought over a one-off custom-made Alex Perry gown, which I got so many comments about and it was great to showcase the talents of my friend. Tonight [for the Cannes closing ceremony] I will be wearing Atelier Versace, which is the perfect dress for the closing ceremony and also lovely for me to wear an Italian designer considering my history with Italy."
A career highlight
"I have already had many great experiences in the past year working for L'OréalParis, but this by far is not only a highlight of my time with them, but without a doubt a career highlight also."
