| Man of Style: Chris Pine |
"My manager always reminds me that a career isn't a sprint, it's a marathon," says Chris Pine. Hey, he can't help being a man in demand. Crashing into cinemas this month: Unstoppable (out January 6), with Pine as a rookie train conductor out to save a city from destruction by a deadly, chemical-packed locomotive. Then, the LA native has three more shoots (This Means War with Reese Witherspoon; the Jack Ryan reboot, Moscow; and the sequel to Star Trek). On your mark…
With Unstoppable, your hard-core, alpha-male film persona continues. Is that the real you? "Oh God, no! I'd rather stay in a nice hotel, get a massage and spend the afternoon reading. But I was the good child who studied hard throughout school. There is a part of me that's been pushed down so long by the kid who obeys all the rules that to play absolute maniacs is fantastic."
Give us a taste of real-life Chris. "I definitely have a propensity for breaking inanimate objects. I've destroyed so many phones, I can't even tell you. I've gotten a lot better. But it's embarrassing."
Has this rage been fuelled by your oft-reported disdain for paparazzi? "I have a lot of self-righteous fury about their presence, which gets me nowhere. I've asked big, big movie stars how they deal, and their advice is to go to a Zen place and be at peace with it. But that requires tremendous energy, unless you have the ability to let the attention roll off you like water off a duck's back. I admire those with that capacity."
Does Lindsay Lohan, with whom you did Just My Luck, have that? "Yes! It's extraordinary, but the thing with people who have been child actors is that the difference between reality and fiction is blurred. Lindsay would be as at ease with the camera on her right now as she would without. I have a great empathy for her journey, though—she's been dealt a difficult hand."
Okay, fashion. What do you like? "I'm into RRL, Ralph Lauren's vintage-inspired line. I love his jeans because I like that thick denim. [US designer] Thom Browne makes a good shirt I like. I try to 'venture out' with shoes—I'm 30 now, so I think I need to get a good pair of boots—but inevitably I go right back to [Converse] Chuck Taylors. You can't beat 'em!"
