Hair how-to: Damage Control 101
Elle Macpherson hair

Troy Thompson, celebrity stylist for TRESemmé, gives us his tips for keeping tresses in top condition.

Problem 1: Split ends
Solution: "Split ends occur when you leave it too long between cuts – if you want to grow your hair, you should still have it trimmed a small amount every 8 weeks," says Thompson. "To protect against splitting in between cuts, use a repair serum, and condition the ends. TRESemmé's Split Remedy can help – the range includes a shampoo, conditioner and serum, and will deliver great results."

Problem 2: Heat damage, caused by using straighteners, blow-dryers and curling-irons
Solution: "There is only one way to solve this problem: use a heat-protector, such as TRESemmé's Heat Tamer Protective Spray, before styling. Apple some of the product (a 20cent-piece size) to your hands, then work it through the hair from the mid-length to the ends," says Thompson. "Then comb the hair through to help evenly distribute the product." Finish styling as normal.

Problem 3: Brushing breakage
Solution: "When hair is wet, I advise using a wide-tooth comb. It's more gentle on wet hair than anything else – but remember to hold the hair midway down so it doesn't pull too much," says Thompson. "When the hair is dry, use a brush. This helps with the condition, but won't cause breakage."

Problem 4: Communicating you new 'do to your stylist.
Solution: "I always recommend that clients bring tear sheets or pictures of their proposed new style," says Thompson. "Your stylist can go through them [with you] and advise what is best for you and your hair type."

Problem 5: Unruly winter hair
Solution: Women often go wrong in winter, assuming that with less humidity, they don't need to worry about frizz. But says Thompson, "conditioners and heat protectors are more important in the winter than summer." To avoid frizzy winter locks, he suggests drying the hair fully at the outset. Another tip? "Use an anti-frizz cream or serum throughout the season."

Image: When it comes to hair inspiration, Thompson can't go past a homegrown icon. "My favourite hair muse is our Elle Macpherson; she goes to show that no matter what your age, if your hair is groomed and well looked after, you can wear it as long as you like!"

TRESemmé Split Remedy Shampoo and Conditioner $11.49 each; TRESemmé Split End Sealing Serum $11.49; TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protection Spray, $7.99; 1800 061 027
